Then worked in in Le Havre, France becoming a fluent French speaker

Later promoted Captain
Transferred to 12th Royal Scots as Commander of 'C' Company in 1917
Early on during the 1918 German Spring Offensive his company was surrounded in a wood by German forces. He refused to surrender & in the ensuing engagement most of his company were killed or taken prisoner
KIA F&F 23/3/18 by a shot in the head during this same action
