THE PRICE OF SILVER...
In 1977 Robert W. Gould MBE recorded that when the silver price rose to £3 per ounce in 1974, over 1 million British War Medals were scrapped for their silver content. This medallic vandalism happened again in 1979/80 when the silver price rose to £17 per ounce and in 2011 when it peaked at over £27 per ounce.
Since 1st October 2025 the price of Sterling Silver (92.5% pure silver) has risen dramatically and briefly exceeded £40 per ounce in mid-October. This is concerning because there is an increasing risk that the British War Medal will again be targeted as a source of scrap silver.
Now, of the 6.5 million British War Medals issued after WW1, it would be interesting to know how many survive today and how many of these are still in existence as trios & pairs.
