THE RECORD RISE IN THE PRICE OF SILVER...
In 1977 Robert W. Gould MBE recorded that when the silver price rose to £3 per ounce in 1974, over 1 million British War Medals were scrapped for their silver content in this country alone. This medallic vandalism happened again in 1979/80 when the silver price rose to £17 per ounce and in 2011 when it peaked at over £27 per ounce. Well it's happening again now!
The price of Sterling Silver (92.5% pure silver) has risen dramatically, more than trebling from £25 per ounce in mid-2025 to an all-time record high level of £88 per ounce in late January 2026.
Thankfully it's currently below £80 per ounce again, but there's still a real danger that the British War Medal - and others - are being targeted as a source of scrap silver. Whilst still cheaper than Victorian campaign medals, these officially named & highly researchable Great War medals, hard won by members of our own families, are now at significant risk of becoming much scarcer.
So of the 6.5 million British War Medals issued after WW1, one can only speculate as to how many more have been melted down since 1974... how many are still in existence today & how few survive today in trios & pairs?
