THE PRICE OF SILVER...
In 1977 Robert W. Gould MBE recorded that when the silver price rose to £3 per ounce in 1974, over 1 million British War Medals were scrapped for their silver content. This medallic vandalism happened again in 1979/80 when the silver price rose to £17 per ounce and in 2011 when it peaked at over £27 per ounce.
Over the past few months the price of Sterling Silver (92.5% pure silver) has risen dramatically from under £30 per ounce in August 2025 and briefly went over £63 per ounce at Christmas. Currently, in early January, it is ranging above £56 per ounce; this is concerning because there is a genuine & ever increasing risk that the British War Medal is again being targeted as a source of scrap silver.
Now, of the 6.5 million British War Medals issued after WW1, it would be interesting to know how many survive today and how many - or few - of these are still in existence as trios & pairs?
