From Bures, Suffolk - a very small village on the Essex border
To France 23/8/14 with 1st King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regt) & qualified for the ‘Aug-Nov 1914’ Clasp
3 Days later he survived the 1st Battalion’s baptism of fire at Le Cateau, when some 12 Officers & 431 ORs were killed, wounded or missing in the first 20 minutes
Later he suffered a Gun Shot Wound in his left shoulder, was evacuated to Blighty & admitted to the Deaconess Hospital, Edinburgh 6/2/15
After recuperating quickly & he returned to the Western Front
Shortly after this he was taken German POW at Zonnebeke in the Ypres Salient
Then held at Giessen POW Camp in Germany 31/7/15
After repatriation he rejoined his old regiment, was renumbered 3701651 & went on to serve 25 years in the King’s Own
He married Miss Edna P.W.Darking of Withersfield 30/9/39, just after the outbreak of WW2
