Note: In 1917 the social pioneer, Dr Pendrill Varrier-Jones, created the Cambridgeshire Tuberculosis Colony at Bourne to rehabilitate tuberculosis (TB) sufferers by providing them with surgery & fresh-air. In 1918 this TB colony moved to Papworth Hall in Papworth Everard, Cambridgeshire. It consisted of a hospital & sanatorium for patients with tuberculosis and grew into a large, self-sustaining community - The Papworth Village Settlement - which included housing, workshops & work opportunities for the patients & their families.
