To France 13/8/14 with 2nd Royal Irish Regiment & qualified for the ‘Aug-Nov 1914’ Clasp
During the first Battle of Ypres the 2nd Royal Irish Regt was virtually destroyed in fighting around La Bassee 19-20/10/14 near Le Pilly (Herlies). British infantry & French cavalry captured Le Pilly 19/10/14 but were forced to retire by German artillery-fire. They then held their position for 9 hours until every round of been expended, whilst the German artillery at Fournes poured shrapnel onto them from 2000 yards. Instead of surrendering, the survivors - many of them wounded - fixed bayonets, charged & broke through the encircling German regiments. The following day, just 1 Officer & 135 Other Ranks answered the Roll Call
