Joined the Royal Navy 22/9/05
Served on HMS Seagull, a Sharpshooter Class gun boat & mine-sweeper 1909-11
Passed for Stoker Petty Officer 5/2/14
He then served throughout WW1 on HMS Southampton, a Town-class light cruiser armed with 8 x 6-inch Mk XI naval guns plus 2 submerged 21-inch torpedo tubes
HMS Southampton participated in the Battle of Heligoland Bight 1914 & the Battle of Dogger Bank in early 1915
Also in action in the Battle of Jutland 31/5/16 when the German light cruiser, SMS Frauenlob, opened fire on HMS Southampton. HMS Southampton replied with a torpedo that struck Frauenlob & then British 6-inch shellfire set her deck alight. The stricken German vessel quickly capsized & sank with heavy loss of life
