Born Diss, Norfolk, the youngest son of William & Harriett Ray of Dickleborough, Scole, Norfolk
To France 27/7/15 with 8th East Surrey Regiment
Suffered a Gun Shot Wound to his eye - probably at Montauban on 1/7/16 - and was later admitted to 2nd General Hospital on the coast at Le Havre 4/7/16
Note: 4 Days earlier, on the First Day of the Battle of the Somme 1/7/16, Captain Wilfred Percy "Billie" Nevill led 'B' Company, 8th East Surreys over the top, kicking footballs ahead of them in their attack towards the German lines
Pte Ray transferred to Hospital Ship 'Egypt' & returned to Blighty 5/7/16
After recovering he re-embarked for France 11/1/17 & was posted 1st East Surrey Regiment
Then posted back to 8th East Surrey Regiment 4/3/17
KIA F&F 13/7/17
Buried in Perth Cemetery (China Wall), Belgium
With copy of his Medal Index Card, SDGW & CWGC details plus supporting research documentation
