In 1911 he was a Dartmouth 'coal-lumper' - a dockyard labourer who loaded & unloaded coal on & off ships
To France 26/1/15 & served with 1st Devonshire Regiment
Admitted 14th Field Ambulance 21/3/15 with influenza
KIA Somme 26/9/16 during attack on Morval
Note: 1st Devons suffered 40% casualties when they attacked Bovril Trench & Minch Trench 25/9/16. The Regimental Historian, C.T.Atkinson, recorded that "they pushed forward up Mince Trench, south of Morval, using captured German bombs, and when they ran out of these, forcing their way with the bayonet"
