CHARLES JOSEPH MORGAN
Born 'Carolus Josephus Morgan' in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland 6/4/1890
Son of John and Catherine Morgan (nee Rogan) of Belfast & Newcastle-on-Tyne
Educated at St.Cuthbert's Grammar School,Newcastle-on-Tyne
Pre-war he was a well known athlete & School Master at St.Mary's R.C.School, Newcastle
Joined 30th Northumberland Fusiliers 29/11/15
Commissioned from No.5 Officer Cadet Battalion, Cambridge, as 2nd Lieut into the Machine Gun Corps (Heavy Branch) 29/10/16
On the first day of the Battle of Cambrai 20/11/17, he commanded a Mk IV Tank (Serial I.23, part of number 5 Section, 26th Company of 'I' Battalion) in the attack north of La Vacquerie, until he ditched in Corner Trench
'I' Battalion subsequently became 9th Battalion, Tank Corps
On Saturday 23/3/18, during the German Spring Offensive, heserved with a Lewis Machine Gun Company in a defensive line between Montauban & Maricourt on the Somme
Shortly afterwards he was fatally wounded on 25/3/18 (although some original records show 28/3/18)
A whole month later he DOW F&F 28/4/18 in No.8 General Hospital, Rouen
Buried in St.Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France
