To Zeebrugge as a Gunner in the 7th Divisional Ammunition Column, Royal Field Artillery 6/10/14
Note: Arriving too late to defend Antwerp, they were sent to Ypres & fought in the Battles of Langemarck & Gheluvelt later in October 1914
His unit then took part in the Battles of Neuve Chapelle, Aubers Ridge, Festubert, Givenchy & Loos of 1915, the Battle of the Somme 1916, the Battles of Arras, Bullecourt & 3rd Ypres in 1917
In early 1918 the 7th Division moved to Italy
They crossed the River Piave in October & helped to defeat the Austro-Hungarian Army in the Battle of Vittoria Veneto (24/10/18 to 3/11/18)
Whilst serving with 'X7' Trench Mortar Battery RFA he was admitted to 39th Casualty Clearing Hospital, Istrana, Italy & evacuated on No.39 Ambulance Train 6/11/18
Post war he lived at 28 Oxford Street, South Bank, York & received a War Pension for Pulmonary tuberculosis (T.B.) attributable to his military service
