To France 15/8/14 with 9th (Queen's Royal) Lancers & qualified for the 'Aug-Nov 1914' Clasp
Note: On 7/9/14 Lt.Col David Campbell led a charge of 2 troops of 'B' Squadron, 9th Lancers & overthrew a squadron of 1st Prussian Dragoon Guards at Le Montcel in the historic last 'Lance-on-Lance' cavalry charge of the British Army
PTE PAYNE was recorded as wounded the following day 8/9/14
KIA F&F 3/11/14 & was buried in the trenches at Messines, south of Ypres
His original grave was lost so he is now commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres
Also commemorated in the UK on the 9th Queens Royal Lancers WW1 in Canterbury Cathedral & on Banstead Cottage Homes Memorial in Banstead
