10 Days after landing in France the 5th Lancers gained the distinction of being the last cavalry Regiment to withdraw from Mons
They also had the privilege of being the first British Regiment to re-enter Mons 4 years later when tragically, Private George Edwin Ellison of the 5th Lancers was KIA by a sniper - to become'The last British soldier to die in the Great War'- shortly before the Armistice came into effect at 11.00am on 11/11/18
Pte George William Burdett Clare of the 5th Lancers was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions on 28-29/11/17 at Bourlon Wood, during the Battle of Cambrai (VC LG 8/1/18) - Click Here
