GEORGE ERNEST MELFORD BROWNE
Born Edmonton 1899
Son of George Ernest Browne & Ada Emily Browne of 102 Boscombe Road, Southend-on-Sea
He started work as a clerk at the London County & Westminster Bank in April 1916
He joined the Army Service Corps in March 1917 & passed the MT ASC Test as a Heavy Section Driver 19/4/17
Then transferred to the Rifle Brigade (S/32315) & undertook Home Defence duties on the Isle of Sheppey, Kent
After being recommended for a commission in the Royal Flying Corps, he passed fit as an Observer 23/10/17
He gained his Observer's wings 10/8/18 & joined 42 Squadron
KIA F&F 23/9/18 whilst flying as observer with pilot 2nd Lieut Douglas Arthur Newson on a reconnaissance mission, when their R.E.8 (C2300) was shot down
This ‘kill’ was credited to Vizefeldwebel Kurt Ungewitter of Jasta 24 - the 4th of his 7 victories in WW1

Condition: With 'WA' Woolwich Arsenal stamp on reverse, GVF
