To France 26/9/15 & served with 105th Field Company, Royal Engineers
Awarded the M.M. for his Bravery in the Field whilst serving with 25th Division:
'At 7.15am on 17th April 1918, the line in front of Dranoutre was heavily attacked after a terrific bombardment. Our artillery barrage was excellent and the attack was beaten off with great slaughter by machine guns and rifle fire …..L.Cpl Sayles & Cpl Smart, 105th Field Coy RE, received the Military Medal for their services.'
