    Born at Whitehill, Colvend, Kirkcudbrightshire 1897

    Son of James McQueen Pool & Jessie Pool of West Barcloy, Colvend

    To Gallipoli 6/6/15 as 1289 Corporal, 1/5th King's Own Scottish Borderers

    Suffered a bullet wound in his right shoulder, was admitted to 149th Field Ambulance & then transferred to 'W' Beach Clearing Hospital, Cape Helles 12/7/15

    Returned to the UK where he was commissioned as 2nd Lieut, 6th Scottish Rifles (Cameronians) 25/10/16

    KIA F&F 20/9/17 during the 3rd Battle of Ypres

    Commemorated on Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium

    Also commemorated on the Colvend Parish War Memorial, on the Dalbeattie War Memorial & in Kirkmabreck Parish Churchyard, Creetown, Wigtown, Dumfries and Galloway, where a family memorial headstone is inscribed: ‘In loving memory of his only son Lieut James Williamson Pool, 6th Cameronians. Killed in Action in France 17th Sep 1917 aged 21 years’

    Note: The 1/5th KOSB Battalion History records that Cpl J.W.Pool was awarded the M.M. 'for leading a section and bombing back the enemy... twice wounded & was killed some time afterwards'but this must have been based on a recommendation only since there's no record of his M.M. being gazetted.
