Tried by District Courts Martial & awarded 28 days detention

To France 8/12/15 and served with 1st Rifle Brigade

KIA F&F 1/7/16 on the First Day of the Somme

Note: The 1st Rifle Brigade attacked Redan Ridge on 1st July 1916 and was met by a hail of rifle & machine-gun fire from Heidenkopf Redoubt (the Quadrilateral). They entered the German first line by 10.00am but after heavy close quarter fighting along the trenches, the small party of survivors were finally driven out in the late afternoon by a counter attack.

This action cost the 1st Rifle Brigade 474 casualties, of whom 14 Officers & 154 Other Ranks were killed
