Born St.Vigeans & lived at Broughty Ferry, Forfarshire.

To France 30/12/15 with 2nd ROYAL SCOTS FUSILIERS.

This battalion went over the top on 1/7/16 in 30th Division attack near Montauban & suffered 178 casualties.
DOW F&F 2/7/16 on 2nd Day of the Somme & is buried in plot 1.B.11 of Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-L'Abbe.

Born Middlesbrough, Yorks.
To France 8/12/15; KIA F&F 1/7/16 on the First Day of the Somme, when the 1st Rifle Brigade attacked Redan Ridge but was met by a hail of rifle & machine-gun fire from Heidenkopf Redoubt (the Quadrilateral). They entered the German first line by 10.00am but after heavy, close quarter fighting along the trenches, the small party of survivors were finally driven out in the late afternoon by a counter attack. This action cost the 1st Rifle Brigade 474 casualties, of whom 14 Officers & 154 Other Ranks were killed.
