1914/15 STAR & VICTORY MEDAL - KIA SOMME 1st July 1916

Arthur Horace Dolamore, born Bethnal Green & lived at Forest Gate.

To France 8/6/15 & served with 2nd Essex Regiment.
KIA F&F 1/7/16 during 4th Division attack on 'The Quadrilateral' (Heidenkopf Redoubt) on the First Day of the Somme & is now commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.

Note: Of the 24 Officers & 606 Other Ranks who went into action, this attack reduced the battalion strength to just 2 Officers & 192 Other Ranks.

KIA F&F 1/7/16 during 48th South Midland TF Division attack on 'The Quadrilateral' (Heidenkopf Redoubt) on the First Day of the Somme.
He is now commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial & his name is recorded in the Wolverhampton Roll of Remembrance (c.1920).

Note: 'The Quadrilateral' was at the northern end of the Redan Ridge & just east of today's CWGC Serre Road No.2 Cemetery.

Condition: Scroll slightly discoloured, with a few small holes & edge tears. Medals EF on old, faded silk ribbons.

1914 TRIO to 8th BLACK WATCH OFFICER CASUALTY, commissioned from 14th LONDON SCOTTISH.

Kenneth Richmond Cook, born 1893.
According to a transcript of his Times obituary (1/8/16), he was educated at Richmond Hill School, was Head Boy of Richmond County School & went up to Cambridge University.
He was a fine swimmer, a member of the London Scottish Rugby Football Club & was under training as a middle distance runner for the 6th Summer Olympic Games (originally scheduled for Berlin in 1916 before they were cancelled because of the war).

To France 15/9/14 as Private in the London Scottish.
Commissioned 2.Lieut 'for service in the field' into 8th Black Watch 21/1/15 & served with the Trench Mortar Battery. Wounded on the Somme 14/7/16.
DOW HOME 30/7/16 & is buried in Richmond Cemetery, Surrey.

With old tailor's copy 'Aug-Nov 1914' Clasp, plus large black & white photo of his headstone.

BRITISH WAR MEDAL to a 15th AIF 'POZIERES' CASUALTY

5332 PTE P.J.BARDON 15 BN A.I.F.

Born circa 1887, the son of Nicholas and Margaret Bardon, Stonehall, Crookedwood, Mullingar, County Westmeath, Ireland.

Enlisted in Queensland 7/12/15 into the Australian Imperial Force.
Landed in France 8/6/16.

Wounded in Action 8/8/16 at Pozieres, on the Somme: 'Late on 8th August, the 15th AIF put in an attack alongside a battalion of the Suffolk Regiment. Amidst heavy shelling and machine-gun crossfire, the attack stalled following the loss of almost all of the officers in the assaulting companies; nevertheless, despite progress on their left, they succeeded in capturing part of the German line, but were ordered to withdraw the following day.

DOW F&F 12/8/16 at 15th General Hospital & is buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, Pas de Calais.

WILLIAM ARTHUR GILL JACKSON (on Memorial Plaque)

Born Middlesbrough, Yorks.
To France 8/12/15; KIA F&F 1/7/16 on the First Day of the Somme, when the 1st Rifle Brigade attacked Redan Ridge but was met by a hail of rifle & machine-gun fire from Heidenkopf Redoubt (the Quadrilateral). They entered the German first line by 10.00am but after heavy, close quarter fighting along the trenches, the small party of survivors were finally driven out in the late afternoon by a counter attack. This action cost the 1st Rifle Brigade 474 casualties, of whom 14 Officers & 154 Other Ranks were killed.
